Checkpoints For Swing at Contact – How to Play Baseball

IMG_2394 coachFollowing are the positions hitters should strive for at contact.
1. A capital “A” should be formed between hitters’ legs so they are hitting against a firm front leg for maximum bat speed.
2. Head should be positioned over the rear leg.
3. Head should be pointing downward as eyes are looking at contact area.
4. The weight should have transferred forward, so the rear foot should be up on toe with the hitter’s heel pointing up and rear shoe laces pointing at pitcher.
5. Hitter’s belly button should be facing pitcher.
6. Hands are in a palm-up, palm-down position, meaning no wrist roll until well after contact.

All of this sounds easy but in essence is very hard to perfect for a couple of reasons. First, it is difficult to transfer weight without letting the head drift forward. Secondly, it is difficult to turn hips extremely fast without pulling the head away from contact area. Furthermore, the inclination for hitters is to roll the wrists at contact for more bat speed.
